In my classmate Mike's blog post, Watts: Texting ban a safety issue, he talks about an article found in the Austin American Statesman which argues that driving while texting is more dangerous than drunk driving. The article also says that texting while driving should be banned statewide but Governor Rick Perry vetoed the bill that could've made this happen. Like Mike, I think implementing this law would prove to be very difficult. Many Texans will continue to text while driving even if the law were passed. On the other hand, the threat of fines may cause some to stop with the bad habit.
Up until last week I would've disagreed with this completely. I actually ended up wrecking my car last week because I was texting while driving. Now, I realize how dangerous texting while driving really can be. I just got lucky and walked out of my car healthy. Before the wreck, I was in denial, like many Texans, about the possible consequences of my actions. I now agree that texting while driving is dangerous habit that needs to be stopped in Texas.

Governor Perry Opposes Confederate Flag License Plate
According to the "Austin American Statesman",the state Department of Motor Vehicles' governing board is considering approving new Texas license plates displaying the confederate flag. This is a very controversial and emotional issue for many people. Recently, Governor Rick Perry gave his opinion on the subject saying, "We don't need to be scraping old wounds". While, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson disagrees saying that the confederate flag is a historical symbol. I think that both men have valid points but I do agree that having a confederate flag license plate would stir up too many emotions for many Texans. I think Texas citizens should be the ones to decide on whether or not the new license plate should be approved. Apparently, many Texas people disagree with the license plate idea because 2,000 signatures opposing the confederate flag license plate were submitted to the state Department of Motor Vehicles'. Because of all the controversy surrounding the license plate, I honestly don't think it will be approved but its a subject all Texans should be aware of.

Can an Austin biotech firm radically change the world's food supply?
According to this article in The Texas Observer an Austin-based biotech firm named ViaGen thinks they can save the world from hunger. Since, the first announced cloning of an animal in 1997, Viagen has experimented with cloning livestock and breeding the clones in order to solve food shortages. They think they've found the solution to world hunger. The question is whether its ethical and safe for people to "play God" to make the clones and then consume these clones. Its a very controversial issue. Believe it or not many Americans may have already unknowingly consumed cloned animals or their offspring because company's are not required to put information about their meats being clones anywhere on the packaging. I think Americans deserve to be aware of this issue. Therefore I definitely think it would benefit anybody to read the article.
